Let's work together
Twenty years of experience in the classroom has demonstrated to me that teaching writing challenges and rewards both instructor and student. I believe that maintaining an environment of openness is essential to draw out and improve a writer’s strengths as well as to manage more efficiently the challenges we face when teaching writing.
Contact me – and let’s collaborate to replace the anxieties and frustrations of teaching writing – so that we may witness with excitement the transformation improved writing can generate.

Literacy Education FAQs
How can working with a literacy expert be helpful to me as a teacher or my school site?
Being a secondary English teacher or literacy coach comes with an extensive portfolio of responsibilities. Teachers and administrators in the current highly prescribed post COVID-19 educational environment struggle for time to reflect and integrate new practices that can support humanistic and relational writing practices. Working with authentically and collaboratively generated professional development can support integrating strategies that teachers instinctively know work to improve student outcomes.
What kinds of professional development and teacher support does Dr. Viskanta provide?
As a teacher with 20 years of classroom experience, I am familiar with professional development that fails to invigorate our practice. I work collaboratively and partner with stakeholders who want to improve classroom practices to create supports and strategies that will achieve goals set out by my partners. I always devise coaching strategies with the perspective of what can immediately be utilized in the classroom with integrity and success.
What philosophical perspectives does Dr. Viskanta bring to literacy education?
My research finds that an ethic of care and empathy precedes and is closely related to student success. Building positive relational foundations with students who are given choice and a degree of autonomy impacts instruction and learning outcomes. Writing especially requires trust and respect as it requires constant improvement and feedback.
